A CT (computed tomography) simulation scan is an important step in creating your radiation treatment plan. The images from the scan are used create a digital treatment plan just for you. The goal of the CT simulation appointment is to create an accurate and reproducable position for your daily treatments.
Your radiation therapists will create devices to help position you in the same way for each appointment. These devices are called immobilization devices. Example of immobilization devices are masks, leg molds, head rests, sponges and pillows.
If your treatment plan includes radiation therapy to your head, neck, or brain, you will most likely get a customized mask to wear during each treatment. Masks are made of a special plastic material (thermoplastic) and look like mesh. The purpose of the mask is to keep you in the right position so that the radiation is delivered to the right place. If you get a mask, you will wear it for each treatment.
