Dr. Chen Reflects on One Year Anniversary

Dr. Chen Reflects on One Year Anniversary

When Dr. Jonathan Chen, a Michigan native, moved to Seattle to join our team, he had no idea what the next year would look like.

Now, he’s treated prostate cancer patients at three renowned cancer treatment facilities — SCCA Proton Therapy Center, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, and the University of Washington — developed strong bonds with his colleagues, and adjusted his patient engagement process to align with COVID-19 protocols. When he’s not working, you can find him and his wife enjoying all the outdoor activities Washington has to offer.

Dr. Chen and his wife Victoria spend a sunny weekend kayaking.

At the Proton Therapy Center, he’s been particularly impressed by its commitment to cultivating a positive patient experience. From each patient’s first touchpoint to their post-treatment exams, the Center executes timely, thorough patient communication and seamless patient navigation. He says it’s unlike any other facility he’s visited before.

Dr. Chen and his wife participated in the ZERO - the End of Prostate Cancer Run/Walk last year (and this year)!

Dr. Chen is committed to ensuring all patients understand their options and what to expect during treatment. Earlier this year, he and his fellow colleagues took this more seriously than ever as some patients expressed interest in delaying their care due to the COVID-19 pandemic, at which time they discussed the feasibility of doing so without compromising their patient’s cancer outcomes.

To meet patients where they were, Dr. Chen also transitioned the majority of his new patient visits and follow-ups to telehealth appointments. Patients seem to enjoy them because they are convenient and safe, but he’s looking forward to when it’s safe to shake their hands or give them a hug again!

As a physician who cares for his patients as if they were his own family members, Dr. Chen stays up-to-date on the latest cancer treatment innovations that could benefit his patients. As he looks ahead at the next year, he is hoping to continue exploring and implementing the latest innovations into his practice.

It can be difficult to gauge what a program will be like based off of initial interviews, however Dr. Chen feels this program has remained true to its promises and he looks forward to another year with the Center.
