5 Questions with Skye Nofziger

5 Questions with Skye Nofziger

Skye has been one of our Radiation Therapists since 2013! Many of you know her. She is originally from Oregon and accepted a job at SCCA Proton Therapy Center after she graduated from Therapy School in 2013. Her role is to deliver proton treatment plans that have been prescribed by a Radiation Oncologist.

What drew you to work in proton therapy?

I fell in love with proton therapy when I was hired here at SCCA Proton Therapy Center. The “Bragg Peak” is a term I learned in school, but now I get to apply that concept in my daily work. It makes any therapist happier to know that their patients will receive less radiation to healthy tissue surrounding the tumor.

What’s the most fun you’ve had at work?

It is fun when Halloween comes around. I like to see our patients' reactions to all the costumes. We have even had patients dress up. The therapy team here has done group costumes such as The Wizard of Oz, Disney Princesses, and Minions.

Whom do you look up to, and why?

I look up to my 89-year-old grandmother. She has had to be a caregiver to her daughter, who passed away in 2013 from ovarian cancer. She was also a caregiver to my grandfather, who passed away in 2016. She never complains, never asks for anything from anybody and is one of the most selfless individuals I know. She has gone through some tough years but always seems to have so much joy in her heart. She is a true inspiration.

Tell us something surprising about you!

I am a country girl at heart. I grew up on a small farm in Yamhill, Oregon. My mom, sister and I would go on trail rides with our horses a lot during the summer. I also showed my horse in 4-H.

What’s your favorite vacation destination?

I love to travel and wish I had more time to do so. One of my favorite places so far has been Greece. I travelled there with a group of friends and we stayed on the island Crete. The people were so nice and the beaches were spectacular.
