5 Questions with Ethan Oddy

Meet Ethan, our Clinical Administrative Assistant. Ethan came to us from the UW Medicine Contact Center, but is originally from the opposite side of the US, the Adirondack mountains of New York! Read our 5 Questiosn with Ethan.

What brought you to the proton therapy center?

I was looking around for a different position that would allow me to work more directly interfacing with patients and providers in a clinic setting, vs the call center atmosphere I was in previously. I loved the work I was doing at my previous job, but it felt too much like I was tethered to my cubicle and didn't have a lot of time to interact face-to-face with the coworkers sitting around me, who were also taking patient phone calls. The only interactions I had with patients were over the phone, so it was a little impersonal at times. I was so impressed with all that I had learned about proton therapy when I was in the application process (I watched all the YouTube channel videos for SPTC) and was very excited to accept this role.

What’s the most fun you’ve had at work?

Ever? One of my first jobs was in a family-owned, drive-in, soft-serve ice cream shop in northern NY state, so… enough said?

At the Proton Center? Well, I love all the nurses that I get to work with, and consider it a privilege to work with these awesome care providers… they are some of the coolest people I’ve ever met (and I wouldn’t say that if I didn’t mean it). And I also feel very lucky to sit with the schedulers Nicole and Thu. They are a blast to work with.

How would you describe proton therapy to someone?

A type of radiation treatment that uses cutting-edge technology to more precisely target the tumor site without affecting surrounding healthy tissue as much as other forms of radiation treatment that are available. The way that I describe the treatment center to non-medical friends is that I feel like I work on a Star Trek spaceship!  It's very exciting when you work somewhere that has a particle accelerator! I look forward to taking a tour one of these days to see some of the more restricted zones.

Whom do you look up to, and why?

In real life? My grandparents have always been the best role models. They sacrificed their golden years to help raise my sister and me, and although they were very strict, they have instilled such good values in us. I try to honor them, and make them proud each day with the decisions I make for myself and those I hold close.

If I had to choose a celebrity, it would probably be Neil Peart (drummer from the band Rush). I’m a percussionist, and that man is a drum legend! He’s had a lot of adversity in his life, and I’ve particularly enjoyed reading a couple of his books about his motorcycle adventures.

Tell us a good joke?

Okay… I have a few:

What are a dog’s favorite type of chips? Rrrrrrrrrruffles!

What lies at the bottom of the sea floor and is shaking? A nervous wreck!

Why did Spider Man cross the road? To get to his website!

What do you get when you cross a snowman and a shark? Frost bite!
