AOSW Conference Highlights Art Therapy

AOSW Conference Highlights Art Therapy

From May 20-22, hundreds of social work professionals gathered in downtown Seattle for the Association of Oncology Social Work (AOSW) Annual Conference. Our center’s very own oncology social worker, Michelle Massey, spoke at the conference and provided insight into the therapeutic arts programs and other clinical services offered at our center.

This year, the AOSW Annual Conference explored the changing and expanding roles of social workers in oncology care through evidence based presentations of innovative programs, therapies, interventions, and partnerships that improve and promote patient centered care. Michelle spoke about proton therapy and the various services available at our Center, including art therapy to assist patients in expressing their emotions while going through cancer treatment.  She also discussed cognitive behavioral therapy, which provides short-term assistance to our patients and families coping with cancer. Michelle facilitates both individual and group therapy sessions, which are open to pediatric patients, adult patients and their families.

AOSW is the world’s largest professional organization entirely dedicated to the psychosocial care of people affected by cancer.  Presentations were given on a variety other topics, including enhancing the quality of life and recovery of people with cancer, fostering communication and support among caregivers, and furthering the study of the social effects of cancer through research and continuing education.
