As the medical community continues to conduct research studies on proton beam therapy, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) Proton Therapy Center and other medical centers within the region are supporting ongoing trials to expand their knowledge of beneficial treatments and relay this information to patients and their families.

Within the past few months, a variety of studies on proton therapy have been released in medical journals:

ScienceDirect, The Evolving Role of Proton Beam Therapy for Sarcomas S.Frisch, B.Timmermann (Aug. 2017, Vol. 29, Issue 8)

Proton beam therapy is often recognized as an alternative to photon-based radiotherapy, offering considerable advantages through directly targeting the lesion without harming surrounding tissues and organs. Today, central nervous system tumors, various sarcomatous tumors, childhood cancer and head and neck tumors are commonly treated with proton therapy. This review evaluates current data from clinical and dosimetric trials, outlining special considerations for pediatric tumors and future prospects of proton therapy.

International Journal of Radiation Oncology, “Comparative Outcomes After Definitive Chemoradiotherapy Using Proton Beam Therapy Versus Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy for Esophageal Cancer: A Retrospective, Single-Institutional Analysis” Mian Xi, et al. (Nov. 1, 2017, Vol. 99, Issue 3)

A recent study compared clinical outcomes between proton beam therapy and intensity modulated radiation therapy, finding that proton beam therapy was associated with improved overall survival, progression-free survival and locoregional-failure-free survival, especially in esophageal cancer patients with advanced stage. The results further suggest that controlled studies will better establish the role of proton beam therapy in esophageal cancer.

The Cureus Journal of Medical Science, “Proton Therapy for Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma: A Three Case Series Describing the Clinical and Dosimetric Advantages of Proton-Based Therapy” Howard Lee, Jing Zeng, Stephen Bowen, Ramesh Rengan (Sept. 20, 2017)

The Cureus Journal of Medical Science recently awarded several doctors at SCCA Proton Therapy Center 2nd and 3rd places in the Proton Therapy: Advanced Applications for the Most Challenging Cases competition. This three-case study analyzes the clinical and dosimetric advantages of proton-based therapy, discovering that intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) appears to match dosimetric predictions as a feasible and safer alternative to photon intensity-modulated radiotherapy, also known as IMRT.

Drug, Discovery & Development Magazine, “Proton Therapy Lowers Treatment Side Effects in Pediatric Head and Neck Cancer Patients” University of Pennsylvania staff (Oct. 25, 2017)

According to the journal Pediatric Blood and Cancer, pediatric patients with head and neck cancer can be treated with proton beam therapy (PBT) instead of traditional photon radiation, resulting in similar outcomes with less impact on quality of life. Researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania as well as Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia analyzed cases of pediatric head and neck cancer treated with PBT between 2010 and 2016, finding that proton therapy is not only effective, but it is also more tolerable for patients.

Springer Link, “Monte Carlo-driven predictions of neurocognitive and hearing impairments following proton and photon radiotherapy for pediatric brain-tumor patients”  D.Fortin, et al. (Dec. 2017, Vol. 135, Issue 3, pp 521-528)

The aim of this clinical study was to predict the significance of the neurocognitive and hearing deficits associated with proton vs photon radiotherapy for children with brain tumors. Research showed that the probability of hearing loss per ear was less for proton therapy than for photon radiotherapy. Therefore, proton therapy is expected to reduce the detrimental effect of radiation upon both a child’s intelligence quotient (IQ) and hearing compared for pediatric brain tumors.
