Focus on Prevention for 2020

Cancer is a mutation of our cells that stops the cells from performing their regular tasks and allows them to grow and multiply rapidly. Many factors can lead to cancer: environmental exposure to carcinogens (cancer-causing agents) and radiation, biological factors such as genetics or skin type, as well as viruses and bacteria, and lifestyle choices, among others. It's not possible to avoid all risk factors – and no one is to blame for getting cancer – but experts do have some recommendations on how to reduce your risk.

One of the biggest things to do to reduce your risk of cancer is to avoid using tobacco products or quit using them if you already do. It's not just lung cancer that's been linked to tobacco use, but many others, including mouth, throat, pancreas, and kidney cancers. Because it's such a well-known carcinogen, eliminating tobacco use is one of the top prevention tips.

Another well-known cancer-causing agent is exposure to UV (ultra-violet) light, mainly through the sun. Therefore, it's important to protect yourself from the sun and especially avoid getting sunburns. Applying sunscreens, even on cloudy days, covering your skin with clothing and staying in the shade can all help prevent cancers such as melanoma. 

Although other risk factors are not as clear-cut, experts still recommend the following:

  • Maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly.
  • Eat a healthy diet that includes fresh vegetables and fruits and limits processed and red meats.
  • Consume alcohol in moderation, which means one drink per day for most people.
  • Get vaccinated against viruses known to increase certain cancer risks. These include Hepatitis B and Human Papillomavirus.
  • Avoid risky behaviors such as sharing needles and engaging in unprotected sex. Diseases contracted through these risky behaviors have been associated with increased cancer risk.
  • If you can, avoid exposure to environmental carcinogens such as asbestos, benzene, and PCBs.
  • Take a vitamin D supplement, especially if you live in the rainy Pacific Northwest. Though not proven, some studies suggest it can reduce the risk of certain cancers such as prostate.
  • Get screened. Many cancers can be detected early, and this can improve survival.
