Greg, Dexter, and Joe have a shared passion: fly fishing. Greg's hobby is small-stream catch-and-release fishing in mountain streams for rainbow and cutthroat trout. Dexter mostly wades for trout and steelhead, and locally fishes the Yakima, Middle Fork Snoqualmie, and Skykomish rivers, though he'll also chase sea-run cutthroats in the Sound. Joe ties flies and fishes exclusively with a fly for all species in fresh and saltwater, including trout, salmon, steelhead, and sea-run cutthroat. His favorite place to be is on the water with a fly rod in hand.

The men have another thing in common: they all survived prostate cancer and were treated here at the Center. In fact, Greg and Dexter first met through the Prostate Dinner Club that meets monthly for all survivors, and current and prospective patients. They also now know each other from the fly-fishing community.

Dexter is an officer in the Washington Fly Fishing Club, which has tremendous resources and activities for experts and beginners alike. You can take beginning fly fishing and casting classes, learn fly tying, join social and conservation efforts, as well as monthly dinners with educational speakers, and in-season club outings to local lakes and fisheries. Check out WFFC.com for more information.

Greg came up with the idea to offer his expertise to other patients and graduates from the Proton Therapy Center. He's excited to field questions, talk fishing, or maybe even have you join them for a few casts or a session of fly tying. If you are interested, talk to Greg, Dexter, or Joe at the next Prostate Dinner Club or contact Meredith, and she will put you in contact.
