Meet Our Proton Prostate Club

Meet Our Proton Prostate Club

Over the summer of 2015 a group of patients with prostate cancer approached the Center and expressed an interest in forming a “non-support, support group.” These patients wanted to create a safe space to connect with other patients facing prostate cancer, and to do so in a setting that wasn’t “clinical.” Rather than a traditional support group, these patients simply wanted to leverage their time in treatment to meet others with prostate cancer and build connections. In response, the Center collaborated with patients and staff to create the “Proton Prostate Club.”

The group hosted its first “Prostate Club Dinner” at Mountlake Terrace’s Diamond Knot Brewery in August of 2015 and has since met every month. The dinners draw together prostate cancer survivors with patients currently receiving proton therapy. Over drinks and pub snacks, these men don’t simply connect over the complexities of prostate treatment, but rather their common experience to forge deep bonds. Prostate Club Dinners have been a fixture for our prostate cancer patients, attracting patients from as far away as Alaska, Montana, and even England!

The most recent Prostate Club drew more than 15 guests. There was a supportive atmosphere as all the guests shared their personal experiences with prostate cancer, from getting their first diagnosis to finding a treatment that suited their lifestyles. The dinner also fostered fun discussion about football, travel and the like, and created relationships that run deeper than a diagnosis. Says patient Gene McGarrity of the evening: “Great conversation, great companionship along with great beer made for delightful and informative evening.”
