Meet Marketing Manager Rob

Meet Marketing Manager Rob

Rob recently joined the Marketing and Outreach team at SCCA Proton Therapy Center. He's a long-time Seattle resident who fell in love with the city after skipping between Denver, Los Angeles, and Sacramento, running campaigns for non-profit arts organizations. "There's so much to love in Seattle: the vibrant arts scene, the natural beauty of the region, amazing food, even the weather." He comes to us from the Washington State Dental Association, where he was their Art Director/Managing Editor for nearly 18 years. Read our 5 Questions with Rob.

What drew you to work in proton therapy?

When I started looking for a new job, I wanted to feel connected in a relevant way to the work I would be doing. I spent many years working in organized dentistry, and they're friendly people, but I was never passionate about teeth or dentistry. I lost my partner to cancer nine years ago, and because of my experience, I knew I could quickly become invested in the SCCA Proton Therapy Center, and the work we do here to help people become cancer-free.

What got you started in your career?

After college, I moved to Colorado and got an internship with a high-end, specialty magazine that was beautifully produced. It was a fantastic opportunity to write, edit, and get a behind-the-scenes look at publishing, art direction, ad sales, and everything else associated with magazines. The publisher was a larger-than-life character who raced her dad's gull-wing Mercedes on the salt flats against some of the Mercury 7 astronauts! Working there always felt like an unexpected gift; I learned so much and have been able to utilize much of what I learned there throughout my career.

Whom do you look up to and why?

That's easy. My dad has always been the best teacher, mentor, and advocate in my life. I still count on him for unflinching honesty, expert advice, and thoughtful guidance. I'm lucky to have such an amazing person in my life.

What do you like to do for fun?

I love everything about cooking; discovering new recipes, sourcing ingredients, prepping the food, cooking the dish, and most importantly, sharing what I've made. Other than that, I spend a tremendous amount of time either outdoors with my dog, Hadji, hanging out with my friends who have dogs, working with dogs at Seattle Humane… you get the picture.

Can you share a favorite vacation destination or recipe?

I recently went to St. Barth's to celebrate my friend's 50th birthday, and it was probably the best vacation I've ever gone on. It was spectacularly beautiful and uncomplicated there: just white sand beaches, gorgeous turquoise water, the camaraderie of a great group of friends, and ample time to relax. It's a slog to get there, but so worth it!
