SCCA Proton Therapy Presents on IMPT Planning Methods at the ASTRO Conference

On October 18th-21st staff and physicians from Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) Proton Therapy Center attended the 57th annual American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Conference in San Antonio to meet with peers and discuss recent industry breakthroughs. Center staff were among those who presented recent findings. They exhibited results from a study which compares two methods of intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) planning. IMPT planning is very sensitive to proton range and patient setup uncertainties. The study investigates the impacts of these uncertainties on clinical target volume based robust optimization (CRO)  and planning target volume based convention optimization (PCO) for liver and lung cases.

CRO is currently the most advanced treatment planning strategy and the preliminary results of the study show CRO better accounts for proton beam range and setup uncertainties and therefore allows for better treatment planning and delivery for patients.

“Using the most advanced planning techniques allows us to provide our patients with the most precise treatment. We were excited to present our findings to the radiation oncology community at ASTRO,” says Tony Wong, PhD, the director of Medical Physics and Dosimetry at the Center. SCCA Proton Therapy constantly strives to use cutting edge treatment planning methods and to expand our knowledge of the most beneficial applications of proton therapy. The Center will continue to investigate the strategies and methods for IMPT planning to provide the absolute best care and treatment for patients.
