5 Questions with Dr. Tseng

5 Questions with Dr. Tseng

Meet Dr. Yolanda Tseng. Dr. Tseng focuses on treating patients with brain and central nervous system tumors, and lymphoma. At home, she likes to spend time with her husband and two boys. Check out our 5 Qs with Dr. Tseng!

What made you choose cancer as your focus of care?

One of the most formative images I had in medical school was of a patient sitting on the exam table and her three care providers: her surgeon, medical oncologist, and radiation oncologist. They discussed her treatment plan while standing around her. I was and am still drawn to this team approach, which is crucial when we are treating our patients for cure or to improve quality of life.

Why are you passionate about proton therapy?

Side effects from radiation arise in part from exposing healthy tissue to radiation. In many cases, the physical properties of proton therapy allow us to treat the tumor while minimizing dose to critical structures. Maximizing efficacy and minimizing toxicity is the Holy Grail in any cancer treatment!

What makes Seattle Cancer Care Alliance the place you chose to work?

I believe that the quality of treatment is tied to the medical team. For a cancer patient, this may include medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists, radiation therapists, medical physicists, radiation dosimetrists, and nurses. SCCA Proton Therapy Center has this incredible team – it is truly a joy to work with our oncology colleagues and our clinical staff. Everyone works toward the same goal, which is to provide the best care for our patients.

What's your favorite quote?

"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." -Eleanor Roosevelt

I love how empowering this quote is and that our confidence should not be based on the opinion of others.

Anything off-the-wall we might not know about you?

I don't have a Facebook account!

I enjoy cooking, eating, and spending time with my husband and two sons! My boys are 4 and 8 years old. Especially during this COVID19 epidemic, we have been playing a lot of games, including Uno and Crazy 8s, bike riding (them) and running (me). We have also been doing more baking because of social distancing, and have made this lemon cake recipe now twice over the past two weeks! It’s a new family favorite.
